The Interior of an English Sentence
Subject, Verb and Object in an English sentence
The introduction to the parts of an English sentence is very important with a view to studying English grammar. The whole of English grammar is based on this basic information about an English sentence.
Generally, an English sentence is divided into two parts namely Subject and Predicate. e.g. the following sentence:-
My brother has made a new model of an airplane.
In the above sentence "My brother" is Subject and remaining part after the subject is predicate.
My brother= Subject.
has made a new model of airplane = Predicate
Definition of subject
A subject is a word or a phrase about which the sentence is written or spoken.
Definition of Predicate
A predicate is information about the subject.
However, in such a division, predicate remains too much loaded with information. That is why, a sentence is divided into three parts namely Subject, Verb and Object with a view to breaking Object in two parts Verb and Object. It facilitates the study of verb and object separately.
Definition of subject
A subject is a word or a phrase about which the sentence is written or spoken.
Definition of Verb
A verb is a word or a phrase made of a helping verb and / or main verb giving information about the action or state of to be or possession of the subject with reference to the tense, voice and mood of the verb.
An English sentence is divided into three compartments which are known as Subject, Verb and Object and these three compartments house different kinds of words. Subject and Object house similar kinds of words but Verb houses different kinds of words.
I have thought of a novel analogy to explain the function of the three compartments. You can see it below:-
An English sentence is like a three bougie train and the verb is its engine compartment and subject and object are the passenger compartments. Like the train, its engine houses only main driver and the assistant driver. The main verb is the main driver and a helping verb is an assistant driver. Other parts of speech like nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions and interjections take their seats in either subject or object compartment as is shown in the picture above.
