Guidelines for writing application letter for job / Résumé
After you have completed your
graduation, the first thing that you will need to do, is writing an application
letter for job.
Your application letter for job is your first impression and first
examination in the job getting process. That is why, you need to write the
application letter for job carefully. The more so, because if, your application
fails the very first examination, you have no further chances of being
recruited. Therefore, an application letter for job must be written with due
care and proper planning.
This process involves writing a covering letter and a résumé. In other
words, you have to write two letters: a letter called ‘covering letter’ and
another letter called ‘résumé’.
A covering letter is very much similar
to a formal letter. It mentions the source of the information of the vacancy
against which you are applying. You give a brief introduction of yourself, your
qualification, your experience and your suitability for the post. You formally
apply for the post here.
Résumé
A résumé is in fact a supporting
document to the covering letter. A covering letter cannot have detailed
information about yourself, It gives only brief introduction of yourself. Therefore
detailed information is given in the resume.
A résumé contains a detailed account
about your personal information like your name, your father’s name, your
contact address, phone numbers, your hobbies, your marital status, and
information about your academic qualifications, extracurricular activities,
experience/ trainings taken, seminars/conferences attended/given and awards
received.
Remember that for writing an application letter
for job you need to write two letters one covering letter and other resume.
Writing only covering letter or résumé is not appropriate. Remember that a
resume must be preceded by a covering letter. In other words, a covering letter
must be supported by a résumé.
A résumé may have the following elements in it:-
1. Objective/s:- It is nice to include objective/s in the beginning of your résumé. The employer can see it just at the beginning and form an opinion about you. But you must know that you may be questioned about them therefore don’t copy paste this element from your friend’s résumé. You may be caught in the interview. Be honest. Don’t lie. Be truthful. If you are a fresher, write that your objective is to get a break.
2. Personal Profile:- You have to
include the following elements in your personal profile in the manner shown in the layout below:-

Extracurricular Profile
6. Seminars attended or given:- Next you can mention your seminars that you have given or attended in one or more sentences.
7. Experience Profile:- If you have work experience, you must mention it making it a profile in the manner given below including the elements like Designation, Work period (from....to....), Name of the organization/company and your CTC per annum.
Experience Profile
9. References :- Next you have to mention the names of three persons under whom or with whom you have worked. You have to provide their address and designation also. The company may contact them and have their opinion about you. You can give the name of your teachers and Principal also. Here you must give the names of such people as speak well of you otherwise result may be negative also. The reference is followed by date, place and signature as shown below:-

Kinds of Résumés
There
are several basic types of résumés used to apply for job openings. You may
choose one depending upon your personal circumstances.
Chronological Résumé
This type of résumé shows your work and academic history in a chronological or reverse chronological manner depending upon the requirement. It starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first. Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order with your current or most recent job, first. Employers typically prefer this type of résumé because it's easy to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them.
This type of résumé
works well for job seekers with a strong, solid work history.
Functional Résumé
A functional résumé focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on
your chronological work history. Your skills and experience is highlighted and chronology goes in the background. It is used most often by people who are
changing careers or who have gaps in their employment
history.
Combination Résumé
A combination résumé is a combination of chronological and functional résumé. It lists your skills and experience first. Your
employment history is listed next. With this type of résumé you can highlight
the skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for, and also
provide the chronological work history that employers prefer.
Résumé With Profile
A résumé with a profile section includes a summary of an
applicant’s skills, experiences and goals as they relate to a specific job. This profile is shown in the very beginning of the résumé. The results of this type of résumé are very satisfying because employers are very busy people. They don't have time to read the whole résumé. A short profile in the beginning doe all the work.
Targeted Résumé
A targeted résumé is a resume that is customized so that it
specifically highlights the experience and skills you have that are relevant to
the job you are applying for. It definitely takes more work and time to write a targeted
résumé than to just click to apply with your existing résumé. However, it's
well worth the effort, especially when applying for jobs that are a perfect
match for your qualifications and experience.
Nontraditional Résumé
A nontraditional résumé is a web-based version of your resume that may include photos, graphics, images, graphs and other visuals and it may be a résumé in a social networking site or even a video résumé. A video résumé is gaining popularity.
Résumé, C.V. or Bio-data
These three words are generally taken as substitutes for each other however the conventions have created differences in them. Nowadays, bio-data is used for marriage purposes. It is only résumé or CV that is now used for employment purposes.
Résumé or C.V. (Curriculum Vitae)
Meaning of résumé or C.V. is the same however there is some difference also. We use résumé for professional purposes when we apply for a job against an opening. While on the other hand, we use C.V. for academic purposes. If you are applying against an academic opening and you have to mention your research record or you want to become a research scholar, you should use C.V or Curriculum Vitae. Similarly, if you are applying against an opening which is non-academic or professional or technical, you can use the word résumé. Besides this difference, a résumé is concise by its nature where as a C.V. has much detailed description of educational and professional achievements.
